Craigievar
Craigievar
Craigievar is a well-appointed, comfortable holiday home, ideally located with uninterrupted views of the Cromarty Firth, there is a beach to walk or just sit and take in the beauty of the location.
A bus service runs every hour to and from Cromarty to Inverness and will stop outside the property if you put your hand out. If you prefer why not explore Cromarty Village about three miles along the shore road and has a beach with grass areas where the children can play.
Cromarty also has a quaint harbour from where you can try the Ecoventures experience which really is an experience not to be missed (make sure you have your picture taken when you leave for the boat). This trip will hopefully allow a close up of the Dolphins and seals that use the Cromarty Firth, you are also taken out to see the various birdlife and the old fortifications on the Sutors - these folks are not clock watchers they are really keen on what they do.
The Emporium, is my favourite stop and here you will receive a very friendly welcome plus you can have coffee/tea with biscuits, while you consider which gift to take home or browse the huge and diverse selection of books. The Village offers a Bakery, Small supermarket, Waterfront Hotel, Pub and Post office. A new 4 car ferry has arrived which will take you across to Nigg. From Nigg head to the Seaboard Villages of Hilton,Balintore and Shandwick and from these villages it is a short distance to Tain where you will find the famous Glenmorangie Distillery, continue north across the Dornoch Firth to Dornoch or take the A836 towards Bonar Bridge, from here you could go up to The Falls of Shin, then head back out to the A9 along the A949 to continue onto The Royal Burgh of Dornoch. Dornoch has it own castle where you can get good food before you explore Dornoch.
A must see would be Dunrobin Castle just out side of Golspie, not to be missed if you like Castles.
Head West to the Isle of Skye and experience the Skye bridge or head South and along the famous Loch Ness taking in Urquhart Castle from where it is said would be the best vantage point to see NESSIE continue onto Fort Augustus where Thomas Telford constructed the locks in the 1800s and opened in 1820.
The Black Isle has some easy walks and for the fitter amongst you the not so easy walks, a small booklet detailing local walks may be bought at the Emporium. Learnie Red Rock has mountain bike trails, I think bikes can be hired in Cromarty, opposite the Bakery. Staying on the Black Isle for the day then a must visit is Chanory point to see the dolphins, it might prove more successful if you time your visit for an incoming tide when may be you will see the dolphins in their hunt for fish which can lead to exceptional leaps from the water, after all that fresh air and exercise you can get good coffee and excellent food at the Eilean Dubh on the high street of Fortrose.
I have tried to cover your first few days but you are in the most beautiful part of Scotland and exploration will lead you to some lovely locations. We hope you enjoy your visit at Craigievar.
Many thanks - Adena & Roy (owners of Craigievar)
